The Hall of Fame for Great Americans is found at Bronx Community College, located in the Bronx with your New York car rentals. This shrine was established in 1900 to honor the people that had such an impact on the growth of America. Here you will find 102 sculptures and plaques commemorating those great Americans for their contribution to the growth of America.
What to expect
When you visit the Hall of Fame for Great Americans with your New York car rentals you will step into an open-air colonnade. The space is 630 feet in length, designed in a Neo-Classical arc by architect Stanford White. When you look out from the museum, you will see a sweeping view of the Harlem River. It is meant to remind you of the integrity, vitality, and growth that these 102 individuals helped to make America what it is today.
Each of the sculptures is made of bronze, and there is a tablet with the name of the person, significant dates, achievements, and quotations. Each of these busts were made specifically for the Hall of Fame, and cannot be duplicated for 50 years after is has been used.
Visiting the Hall of Fame with your New York car rentals, you will be standing on the spot where the British army occupied the area with its successful attacks on Fort Washington in the fall of 1776. The spot is now retaken by the "Great Americans" who now stand there, with General Washington as their leader. To be eligible for nomination, a person must be an American citizen (native born or naturalized); must have been dead for 25 years; and must have made a major contribution to the economic, political, or cultural life of the nation. There are 17 categories represented here, with authors making the largest group, followed closely by statesmen. Other categories include businesspeople, educators, investors, missionaries and explorers, philanthropists and reformers, scientists, engineers and architects, lawyers and judges, artists, physicians and surgeons, soldiers and sailors, and distinguished people outside these classes.
Some of the people you will learn about when you visit with your New York car rentals include Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster, Benjamin Franklin, Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas Jefferson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Samuel F.B. Morse, George Peabody, Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Adams, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mary Lyon, Edgar Allen Poe, and many other Great Americans.

The college was established in 1957 through the efforts of civic-minded groups who felt there was a need for higher education in the neighborhood. Part of the new campus included the Hall of Fame for Great Americans; which was established in the area in 1900. While visiting with your New York car rentals, you might recognize some of the features of the campus from the movie A Beautiful Mind, due to the film's low budget. The campus is quite beautiful, with its neo-Renaissance buildings.
